The Kingdom of Belgium /ˈbɛldʒəm/ (help·info) is a country in northwest Europe. It is a founding member of the European Union and hosts its headquarters, as well as those of other major international organizations, including NATO. Belgium covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres (11,787 sq mi) and has a population of about 10.7 million.

Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home for two main linguistic groups, the Flemings and the French-speakers, mostly Walloons, plus a small group of German-speakers. Belgium's two largest regions are the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north, with 59% of the population, and the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia, inhabited by 31%. The Brussels-Capital Region, officially bilingual, is a mostly French-speaking enclave within the Flemish Region and has 10% of the population. A small German-speaking Community exists in eastern Wallonia. Belgium's linguistic diversity and related political and cultural conflicts are reflected in the political history and a complex system of government.

The name 'Belgium' is derived from Gallia Belgica, a Roman province in the northernmost part of Gaul that was inhabited by the Belgae, a mix of Celtic and Germanic peoples. Historically, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg were known as the Low Countries, which used to cover a somewhat larger area than the current Benelux group of states. From the end of the Middle Ages until the 17th century, it was a prosperous centre of commerce and culture. From the 16th century until the Belgian revolution in 1830, many battles between European powers were fought in the area of Belgium, causing it to be dubbed "the cockpit of Europe"—a reputation strengthened by both World Wars. Upon its independence, Belgium eagerly participated in the Industrial Revolution and, at the end of the nineteenth century, possessed several colonies in Africa. The second half of the 20th century was marked by the rise of communal conflicts between the Flemings and the Francophones fuelled by cultural differences on the one hand and an asymmetrical economic evolution of Flanders and Wallonia on the other hand. These still-active conflicts have caused far-reaching reforms of the unitary Belgian state into a federal state.

How different is Belgium from the United States?
Q. I'm a military child and we're transferring to Belgium next July. What should I expect, and is there anything I should brace myself for? How different is it and any advice?

A. Like FC said. You will probably be attending an English speaking school provided by the militairy. One of them is SHAPE International: To know how it would be different ... no comparison ... no idea what your situation is at the moment. Belgian youngster are an active lot on the whole. There are loads of organisations you can join for anything from volleyball to fanfare bands that play on streetmarkets in spring and summer. Many Belgians will speak English but some might be better at French. Education is taken very seriously in Belgium, probably even more so than in the US. Check this out too from Expat.be:

What are the roots of the conflict in Belgium?
Q. Western Europe is home to two of the world's wealthiest countries: Switzerland and Belgium. Both are examples of multi-ethnic states; however, Belgium has great deal of ethnic tension, while Switzerland is a bright example of multi-ethnic cooperation.

A. "Belgium has a long history history of tension between the majority of Flemish speakers (concentrated in the north) and the French-speaking Walloon minority (most of whom live in the south). It is certainly possible that the country will break up soon. However, there are reasons to doubt both the likelihood of breakup and the claim that such an event demonstrates the failure of federalism."

Why do the beers from Belgium taste so strange?
Q. I had some beers from Belgium over the holiday. I have drunk Budweiser type beers and some micros and thus I am familiar with their taste. But these beers are very different musty tasting.

A. Not strange but unique and truly traditional. This answer is long. After the main body I have a couple lists to help explain the complexity of strange flavors in the Belgian beers. Any beer can be described as unique taken from its origins. But when considering the ingredients and methods which constitutes its flavor, then Belgian beers are indeed in a class all their own. They are strange in that their flavor(s) are earthy and bold, unlike most any beer drank. They are sour and musty. We use descriptors such as horse-blanket, barnyard, sour, and dusty in order to understand and appreciate them. The methods employed are unique to Belgium as well.
